Following Iran’s revolution and the Iran-Iraq war, the initial 1975 agreement with an Italian consortium to build a steel plate factory in Bandar Abbas was completely revised. The project’s location was moved to Isfahan Province, with the cornerstone laid in 1981. The new contract placed the Iranian side in charge of execution, while the foreign partner provided supervision and equipment and transferred technical knowledge. The first phase, with an annual capacity of 2.4 million tonnes, was finally operational by 1992. Over the next three decades, the company and its subsidiaries expanded to a massive 10.3 million tonnes of total capacity, transforming the group into the largest steel company in the Middle East and North Africa with over 130 firms across 24 Iranian provinces.
